‘I didn’t see the harm in shooting this’- Tennis’ biggest star Roger Federer on his new venture

Tennis’ biggest superstar, Roger Federer, is set to get a new documentary, two years after he announced his retirement from professional tennis. 

Federer, widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time and the biggest star in the history of the sport, called time on his illustrious career in September 2022. 

The Swiss Maestro, winner of 20 majors and 28 Masters titles and many other big titles, had an emotional send-off at the Laver Cup, with his biggest rivals Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal present. 

Since retiring, however, Federer has remained in the spotlight, attending Wimbledon and Laver Cup, and turning up for his numerous sponsors. 

Federer has now revealed the next thing in his post-retirement era, with the former world No 1 set to release a documentary. 

According to the six-time ATP finals champions, the documentary will capture the final 12 days of his career, featuring interviews with rivals and friends. 

Federer revealed his initial intention was to share it with just his close friends and family, but he decided to turn it into a feature as it is something the tennis world would want to see. 

“Initially, the idea was to capture the final moments of my professional tennis career so that I could have it later on to show my family and friends,” Federer said as per Variety. “During my career, I tended to shy away from having cameras around me and my family, especially during important moments. But I didn’t see the harm in shooting this as it was never intended for the public. However, we captured so many powerful moments, and it transformed into a deeply personal journey. I am happy to be partnering with Prime Video because of their vast global reach and significant presence in the film industry. This ensures that the story of my final days in tennis will resonate with both tennis enthusiasts and broader audiences worldwide.”

According to Variety, the documentary is directed by Asif Kapadia, Oscar and BAFTA winner for Amy Winehouse documentary “Amy” (2015), BAFTA winners “Senna” (2010) and “The Warrior” (2001) and “Diego Maradona” (2019). It is co-directed by Joe Sabia (Vogue’s “73 Questions” franchise). 

While a release date is not set yet, it is expected to come out in the summer, around Wimbledon.
