Only first place guarantees automatic qualification; the Super Eagles currently sit 4th in Group C, six points behind leaders South Africa, with four games left to play.

With only one win and four draws from six games, the Super Eagles have only collected seven points, which makes it unlikely they can finish as one of the four best second-placed teams that qualify for the playoffs, should they manage to finish second.

What Okocha said

Okocha, who represented the Super Eagles at three World Cups, shared similar sentiments. While he expressed confidence in the team, he stressed the importance of winning the remaining matches.

“If we want to give ourselves any chance of qualifying, we have to be thinking of winning all our remaining matches,” he told iDiski Times’ David Kappel.

“Of course Bafana Bafana are top in the group, it will be a difficult game to play but of course we still believe that we can go there and win.

“If we want to qualify those are the games that we need to win. I believe that we can win there, but it’s definitely not going to be easy.”

Meanwhile, before the next round of World Cup qualifiers in September, the Super Eagles are set to play the Unity Cup, an invitational friendly tournament, along with Ghana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.
