Huge surprise as Manchester United leave ex-captain behind ahead of pre-season tour
The full squad list for Manchester United’s U.S. pre-season tour is out, and it comes with a few surprises.
While Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo are among the names heading to America, one key figure from last season, Harry Maguire, has not been included in the travelling party.
Maguire absence explained amid key squad omissions
Despite featuring 40 times under Ruben Amorim last season and regaining prominence since being stripped of the captaincy by Erik ten Hag, Harry Maguire will not be making the trip across the Atlantic.
According to Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst, his absence is due to a “personal matter” with the expectation that he could link up with the team later.
Maguire’s exclusion raised eyebrows considering his importance to Amorim’s backline in the previous campaign.
Alongside Maguire, other high-profile names not travelling include Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia, all of whom have reportedly been told to find new clubs this summer.
Youth take centre stage in Amorim’s plans
Amorim’s squad for the Premier League Summer Series reflects his continued trust in Manchester United’s young talent.
Tyler Fredericson, who made his senior debut last season, has been called up again. Defenders Reece Munro and Diego Leon also made the cut, as did midfielders Jack Fletcher and Sekou Kone, both of whom featured during the club’s trip to Sweden.
However, new signing Godwill Kukonki, who recently signed his first professional contract, was not included in the squad.
With matches against West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton lined up, Amorim appears focused on building a refreshed and competitive unit ahead of a campaign without European football.
