How Junior Stars Can Still Make U17 AFCON Despite Humbling CECAFA Semi Loss to Tanzania
Kenya’s Junior Stars may have fallen 3–1 to Tanzania in Sunday’s CECAFA U17 semi-final in Addis Ababa, but their dream of qualifying for the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) remains alive.
The qualification format provides a lifeline that keeps Kenya firmly in contention despite the setback.
How the Semi-Final Unfolded
Kenya began the match brightly, earning a penalty in the 10th minute after Tanzanian goalkeeper Haji Ally Abdallah fouled Derrick Muchiti Obote in the box. Abdallah, however, redeemed himself by saving the effort, a turning point that shifted momentum to Tanzania.
The Tanzanians, unbeaten in the group stage, took control. Nhingo Juma Luzelenga opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a well-placed header.
Ten minutes later, Luqman Ally Mbabasalu doubled the lead with a composed one-on-one finish. Kenya showed late fight and pulled one back through substitute Armstrong Omondi’s long-range strike in the 84th minute, but Soann Shabani’s stoppage-time effort sealed Tanzania’s victory.
The result confirmed Tanzania as the first CECAFA representative at the 2026 U17 AFCON. Their coach Elienza Nicolaus Nsanganzelu praised his team and said they would now shift focus to winning the regional trophy.
Why Kenya Still Have a Chance
Despite the defeat, Kenya’s qualification prospects remain wide open because CECAFA has three slots for the expanded 2026 U17 AFCON. Two places go to the finalists, while the third ticket is reserved for the winner of the third-place playoff.
This structure ensures that a semi-final loss is not fatal. Kenya must now regroup and prepare for a decisive playoff match.
Who Kenya Will Face Next
Kenya will meet the loser of the second semi-final between hosts Ethiopia and defending champions Uganda. The stakes are simple and unforgiving: win and qualify, or lose and exit.
The Junior Stars showed flashes of potential against Tanzania, particularly through skipper Yusuf Ahmed Mohamed’s leadership and Armstrong Omondi’s impact from the bench. However, the technical team will need to address defensive gaps and improve finishing to stand a chance in the playoff.
One Match to Decide Their Fate
With CECAFA offering three slots, Kenya still control their own destiny. Victory in the third-place playoff against one of Ethiopia or Uganda will secure their ticket to the 2026 U17 AFCON. The task is difficult, but the path is clear.
A single match now stands between the Junior Stars and a return to the continental stage.
