The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) has unveiled a historic professional women's field for the 130th Boston Marathon, with two-time champion Hellen Obiri notably missing.

The lineup, which features athletes from 18 countries, is highlighted by what many consider the most formidable American contingent in the event's history, with 13 US runners boasting personal bests under 2:26.

The elite field sets the stage for a thrilling competition, with top international talent ready to challenge the strong American presence. An American woman has not claimed the open division title since Des Linden's victory in 2018.

"The 130th edition of the Boston Marathon will feature unrivalled depth and head-to-head racing that’ll be exciting from start to finish," said Mary Kate Shea, B.A.A. Chief Operating Officer.

"The strength of the American field, combined with the international field’s experience, is setting the stage for a clash that could result in records and sprint finishes on Boylston Street."

Sharon Lokedi Leads Kenyan Charge as Hellen Obiri Misses

Leading the international charge are Kenyan athletes Sharon Lokedi, Irine Cheptai, and Vivian Cheruiyot, alongside Ethiopian runners Workenesh Edesa and Bedatu Hirpa, all aiming to continue the streak of international winners.

Hellen Obiri, a regular contender, will miss the 2026 event, reportedly to focus on preparations for another competition.

The two-time world 5000m champion made her debut at the 2023 edition of the Boston Marathon, where she claimed the top honours.

Hellen Obiri, the Olympic marathon bronze medallist, successfully defended her title competing at the 2024 edition before finishing second behind Sharon Lokedi in 2025.

Scaroni Headlines Elite Wheelchair Division

In the women's wheelchair division, defending champion Susannah Scaroni returns as the one to beat. The University of Illinois alumna enters 2026 with incredible momentum, having won the Boston, Chicago, New York, and Sydney marathons in 2025. She also secured a victory in Boston in 2023.

Manuela Schär, a former champion and course record holder, also expressed her excitement for the race. "Being a Boston Marathon champion and course record holder is among the highlights of my career," said Schär.

"Embracing the hard course and pushing your limits is part of what makes this race different from others on the world circuit."

The field is packed with former champions seeking to reclaim the top spot, including five-time winner Tatyana McFadden of the U.S., 2024 champion Eden Rainbow-Cooper from Great Britain, and Japan's Wakako Tsuchida, who won five consecutive titles from 2007 to 2011. The 130th Boston Marathon is scheduled for Monday, April 20, 2026.
