He will struggle under Carrick — Manchester United warned over £52m star

Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker has singled one star at the club who could struggle under new boss Michael Carrick.

The 44-year-old, who was most recently in charge at Middlesbrough, is expected to move away from Amorim's 3-4-3 formation.

During his time at Boro, Carrick favoured a possession-based 4-2-3-1 setup, a change that many fans may welcome.

However, Parker believes this tactical shift could expose certain players, particularly Yoro.

The former full-back argues that the young French centre-back, who joined from Lyon in 2024, benefited from the protection of a back three and may be found wanting in a traditional back four.

"I think Yoro struggles in Carrick’s system, I really do," Parker told Metro.

"I haven’t seen anything yet on a consistent basis. I’ve seen more consistency from (Ayden) Heaven than what I have from Yoro."

"The back five covered him in the wide area," he continued. "But I’ve seen him in a four, and once he’s exposed, he looks like he’s treading water all the time. He’s not the quickest, not the greatest of athletes. And I just look at what I saw against Brighton, and it’s a concern."

Carrick's Immediate Priorities at Old Trafford

Despite a challenging festive period that saw the team drop points at home and get knocked out of the FA Cup, Manchester United remain just one point off the Champions League places.

It is widely expected that the new boss will scrap the 3-4-3 system that ultimately failed under Amorim.

At Middlesbrough, Carrick was known for his steadfast commitment to a 4-2-3-1, a formation that appears well-suited to the current United squad.

Carrick's first test as interim manager will be a significant one, as Manchester United prepare to host arch-rivals Manchester City in their return to Premier League action on Saturday.
