‘Austin Eguavoen should resign’ - Samson Siasia tells interim Super Eagles boss to step down
Former Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia has called for the resignation of interim coach Austin Eguavoen after helping Nigeria pick the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) ticket.
Siasia offered this advice to Eguavoen in Abuja during a novelty football match honouring Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC).
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) appointed Augustine Eguavoen as interim coach after the resignation of former manager Finidi George.
Eguavoen should resign to focus on his main duty - Siasia
Siasia believes that Eguavoen, who is also the Technical Director of the NFF, should step down from his role as Super Eagles coach to focus on his primary role.
“As for Austin Eguavoen’s future with the Super Eagles, I will suggest that we wait a while to see how the team will be. It is a very young team. Eguavoen has a job already as the technical director.
"He should resign as Super Eagles manager and concentrate on his job. He cannot hold two positions at the same time. He should decide on which one to hold and leave the other,” he said via the Sun.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured their ticket for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) under the leader of interim coach Austin Eguavoen.
The three-time African champions finished second place at the last edition in Cote d’Ivoire and are hoping to win a fourth AFCON title in Morocco but it remains unclear if Eguavoen will lead the rean to the showpiece or not.
The NFF has not offered Eguavoen the role on a permanent basis or made any decision regarding the future of the Super Eagles manager.
