Arsenal defender William Saliba has expressed confidence in their ability to win the Premier League after the signing of Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting.

The Gunners have come second in three consecutive Premier League campaigns, with many analysts suggesting that signing a striker who guarantees goals will push them over the line.

A few days ago, the North London giants announced that they had completed the signing of Sweden international Gyokeres, the top-scoring player in all European football last season.

Having seemingly filled the obvious gap in their squad, Saliba laid down the gauntlet to other Premier League teams, warning other defenders about the potency of their new acquisition.

What Saliba said

The France international squared up against Gyokeres in last season's Champions League campaign. Arsenal were 5-1 winners against Sporting, and Saliba had a dominant match against Gyokeres. However, his submission suggests that he noticed certain qualities in the Swede which terrified him.

“We know how good he is, it's scary to play against him,” the former OGC Nice defender said. “Of course, I'm so happy to have him in my club, and I'm sure that he will help us to win games and win trophies.

“[He is scary] because when you face a striker who scores goals, you have to be focused! But now he's in our team and he will score for us, so that's good. Every year is different.

On their projections for the coming season, Saliba maintained his full confidence in the team, galvanised by new players like Gyokeres.

“We have to learn from the last three seasons. Of course, we are lucky to have a chance to compete in the Premier League again to try to win.”

“Our mindset is to win the Premier League, and we will give everything from the first game. We have a lot of new players and they will hopefully help us to win this league.”
