Former Nigerian international Garba Lawal has praised Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle for transforming the national team’s style of play, crediting the Malian tactician with introducing a bold attacking philosophy.
Lawal’s comments follow Nigeria’s impressive campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where the Super Eagles finished third, claiming the bronze medal after a series of eye-catching performances.
What Lawal said
Speaking to Footy Africa, the former midfielder noted that Chelle’s approach has made Nigeria a more dangerous opponent on the continental stage.
“He has done well and brought attacking football to the team, and that’s why we scored a lot of goals. Teams are scared of us,” Lawal said.
Nigeria entered the tournament with high expectations after reaching the final of the previous AFCON. While they fell short of another final appearance, the Super Eagles delivered consistent performances and showed greater attacking intent throughout the competition.
Lawal acknowledged the fine margins that often define tournament football, stressing that overall performance does not always guarantee ultimate success.
“It’s difficult, because last AFCON we got to the final and this time we played well and managed to pick bronze. That’s football for you,” he said.
Despite not lifting the trophy, Lawal believed the team’s progress under Chelle was evident.
While praising Chelle’s work, Lawal made it clear that the decision on the coach’s future lies with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
“He has done well overall, but the NFF will decide if he should continue,” he added.
