Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has lifted the lid on his decision to recall Austin Odhiambo to the national team ahead of Kenya’s upcoming fixtures against Burundi and Ivory Coast this October.

Odhiambo’s omission from the squad for the World Cup qualifiers against The Gambia and Seychelles earlier this year sparked debate among fans, especially after his impressive displays during the CHAN 2024 tournament, where he scored twice and was instrumental in Kenya’s run to the quarter-finals.

Despite being one of the team’s standout performers, Odhiambo was benched during Kenya’s CHAN quarter-final clash against Madagascar — a move McCarthy later described as tactical.

His subsequent exclusion from the next national team call-up only fueled speculation about possible disciplinary or personal issues.

Now, McCarthy has moved to clarify the situation, revealing that the Gor Mahia captain had “received the message” and worked hard to earn his way back into the national fold.

“He got the message. He has worked hard, playing every minute for his team so far, earning himself the captaincy, so I am very pleased for the boy,” McCarthy said.

“If he can continue on that path where his qualities shine through for his club, then he will always be part of the national team. He was a member of the CHAN squad and a very important member, but no one comes above the team.”

Odhiambo, Other Players Must Match My Standards

The South African tactician emphasized that discipline, effort, and consistency remain non-negotiable for any player wishing to represent Kenya under his watch.

“If his standards are not up to the level I want in my team, then it does not matter who he is — everyone has to work hard for the team,” McCarthy added. “He has gone and done that, and now he’s back. I’m happy for him — and so should you be.”

Odhiambo’s resurgence with Gor Mahia, where he has not only been ever-present but also handed the captain’s armband, appears to have convinced McCarthy that the 25-year-old midfielder has matured both on and off the pitch.

With Kenya set for crucial fixtures in their bid to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Odhiambo’s return could inject much-needed creativity and leadership into the midfield — a department McCarthy has been keen to strengthen.
