He reports that the Reds are not even planning to bring in a new central defender this winter, despite Giovanni Leoni suffering a serious injury and Joe Gomez being the only alternative at the heart of the defence.

Liverpool and Crystal Palace had reached an agreement for Guehi on the final day of the summer transfer window, but the London club pulled out at the last minute as they were unable to secure a suitable replacement for the defender.

Ornstein suggests that the England international will not leave Selhurst Park in January, and Liverpool will wait until next summer when they will try to sign him as a free agent.

However, competition for his signature will be fierce then, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City all reportedly interested. Chelsea, facing numerous defensive injury concerns, could also join the race for Guehi.

Liverpool are already feeling the strain as Ibrahima Konate has been making mistakes in their recent matches which has seen fans call for the club to sign Guehi in January before they find themselves completely out of the Premier League title race.

Arne Slot's side headed to the international break after losing three stright games across all competitions with te defence faulted for some of their losses.
