Chelsea star Cole Palmer has delivered a hilarious response to claims made by his father that he was the one who taught him everything he knows about football.
In his early years, Palmer spent hours training with his father in the family garden, which was where he began to hone the skills that would eventually propel him to the top of English football.
Natural ability, however, played a role in his development, and his talent quickly caught the eye of scouts from Manchester City, where he joined their academy ranks at just eight years old.
After breaking into the first team under Pep Guardiola and making 41 appearances for City, Palmer made a high-profile move to Chelsea in 2023.
What Palmer said
But while his father’s influence was important, Palmer’s response to the claim that his dad was his primary football teacher was both light-hearted and cheeky.
Palmer, who has rapidly risen to prominence as a Premier League star and senior England international, humorously dismissed the idea during an interview on The New Generation documentary series from Amazon Prime.
"Nah, he did teach me but, he’s just a Sunday League player, it’s not like he was good," Palmer said with a smile, poking fun at his dad’s self-professed role in his rise to stardom.
At just 22 years old, Palmer has already enjoyed considerable success in his young career, including winning the prestigious PFA Young Player of the Year award during his debut season at Chelsea.
