Harambee Stars Defender Reveals Motivation Behind Choosing KCB Over Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards

Kenyan defender Clyde Senaji made a surprise decision when he chose to sign for KCB despite interest from Kenyan giants Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards.

Senaji opted to return home following his departure from Malawian outfit Nyasa Big Bullets, where he spent two years since his signing in 2023, and he had attracted interest from both Gor Mahia and Leopards.

As a free agent, Senaji was an attractive prospect for teams as they could sign the experienced defender without shelling out a transfer fee and the player received plenty of interest.

Gor Mahia were rumoured as favourites to land his signature in July but the player opted to join KCB instead and it has now emerged that the bankers did not just offer him a better deal but the defender also jumped on an opportunity to reunite with some familiar faces at the club.

“I am delighted to be back home and signing for an ambitious club like KCB. I think I will feel very much at home with the bankers because coach [Robert] Matano is a familiar face and also playing with [Humphrey] Mieno who was my former teammate will also make things easier and seamless,” Senaji told Telecomasia over his decision to linkup with his ex-Tusker coach and team-mate.

“The club is really ambitious because they want to win the league this season and I am delighted to be there to help them achieve their target. Of course, it will not be easy but I have to work hard to both win my place and win matches for the club.”

KCB have been on an ambitious recruitment drive as they seek to mount a title chase under four-time Kenyan Premier League winning coach Matano, who brings a wealth of experience to the dugout.

Senaji terminated his contract with Nyasa Big Bullets after falling out with his then coach Peter Mponda, having been left on the bench for a number of matches, despite being a key part of the team and even captaining the side.

He will look to begin a fresh chapter of his career at KCB, who had a disappointing 2024-25 season that saw them finish ninth under former coach Patrick Odhiambo.
