Harambee Stars Defender Returns to Gor Mahia After Stints in Sweden
Record FKF Premier League champions Gor Mahia FC have officially announced the return of powerhouse defender Frank Odhiambo.
The Kenyan international rejoins the club from Swedish top-flight side Djurgårdens IF, bolstering Gor Mahia’s defensive ranks as they aim to maintain their dominance on both the local and continental stages.
The club confirmed the signing via their official social media channels, stating that Frank Odhiambo has committed to a two-year contract.
The news marks a significant ‘homecoming’ for a player who was once a fan favourite before seeking professional opportunities in Europe.
Frank Odhiambo to Gor Mahia: A Strategic Defensive Boost
Frank Odhiambo’s return comes at a critical juncture for Gor Mahia. Known for his aerial prowess, physical strength, and composure on the ball, the centre-back is expected to slot directly into the starting lineup.
His experience in the Swedish league has undoubtedly refined his tactical awareness, making him a more mature and formidable presence than the youngster who left the club a few seasons ago.
The Head coach and the technical bench will view this signing as a massive boost. Frank Odhiambo’s familiarity with the club’s culture and the high-pressure environment of the Nairobi-based giants means he will likely require very little time to adapt.
Frank Odhiambo Eager to Catch Benni McCarthy’s Attention
While his stint in Sweden involved loan spells to gain match fitness and experience, including time at Vasalunds IF, the defender has remained a highly-rated prospect.
By returning to Gor Mahia, Frank Odhiambo joins a list of elite Kenyan players who have opted to return to the FKF Premier League to revitalise their careers and provide veteran leadership.
“I am open to returning to the FKF Premier League during the mid-season transfer window," Odhiambo stated in an exclusive interview with Mozzart Sport sometime back.
"I strongly feel that a player performing well in the Kenyan top tier has a better chance of earning a Harambee Stars call-up compared to one playing in the Swedish third tier. I would not mind returning home and playing competitive matches consistently.”
For Gor Mahia, securing a player of his calibre on a permanent two-year deal is a statement of intent to their rivals, signalling that the club remains the premier destination for top Kenyan talent.
