By Wednesday, they followed up with a resilient victory over Brazil, a result that sealed their place in the round of 16 with one group game still to play.
Morocco U20s make history with FIFA’s first Green Card use
In front of over 11,000 fans at Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos, Morocco struck twice through Yassir Zabiri and Gessime Yassine. But the real drama came in the second half when the referee awarded Spain a penalty.
Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi immediately raised his green card, invoking FIFA’s new Football Video Support (FVS) system. After reviewing the footage, the referee overturned the penalty decision and booked the Spanish forward for simulation.

For the first time in an official FIFA competition, the green card was used. It allows the coach to challenge a referee’s decision and request a VAR review.

The intervention proved historic; it was the first time in a FIFA tournament that a green card challenge directly influenced the outcome of a match. Morocco held firm and secured a crucial win.
Just two days later, Morocco faced Brazil in a closely contested match. The Atlas Cubs dug deep, defending with discipline and taking their chances to earn a famous win.
The result not only gave them two victories in two matches but also guaranteed their progress to the knockout stages, regardless of their final group fixture.
What is FIFA’s Green Card?
The green card is part of FIFA’s experimental Football Video Support (FVS) system, designed for youth competitions and leagues without the infrastructure for full VAR.
Each coach has two challenges per match. Reviews can be requested for goals, penalties, direct red cards, and mistaken identity.
If the challenge is correct, the team retains their two appeals. If not, one is lost. The system aims to reduce clear errors while avoiding the delays and costs of a full VAR setup.
