Former Super Eagles star tips Nigeria to overcome Mozambique in AFCON 2025 Last-16
Former Nigerian international Peter Ijeh has backed the Super Eagles to secure a place in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, predicting a win over Mozambique in their round-of-16 encounter.
Nigeria heads into the knockout stage in formidable form, having recorded a perfect group-stage run while scoring a tournament-high eight goals.
Their impressive displays have made them strong favorites against Mozambique’s Mambas ahead of the clash scheduled for Monday, January 5, at the Fes Stadium.
What Ijeh said
Speaking in an interview with Footy Africa, Ijeh acknowledged Mozambique’s remarkable progress at the tournament but insisted that Nigeria’s quality and experience would ultimately make the difference.
“Mozambique winning an AFCON game for the first time and reaching the last 16 is a huge achievement, and they can be very proud of their efforts at this tournament, regardless of what happens next,” Ijeh said.
The former striker believed the Mambas would put up a competitive fight but expects the Super Eagles’ attacking depth to prove decisive.
“As it is, I think they will again play their part in a decent contest, where Nigeria’s far superior firepower will eventually tell,” he added.
Historical records further strengthen Nigeria’s case. The Super Eagles have won four of their five previous meetings with Mozambique, with the only stalemate being a goalless draw during a 2009 World Cup qualifier.
