FIFA proposes ‘mercy rule’ after watching Liverpool humiliate Manchester United
World football governing body, FIFA, will consider a new rule for referees in the game after watching Manchester United’s historic 7-0 loss at Liverpool.
The body’s referee chief, Pierluigi Collina questioned the stoppage time during the remarkable encounter at Anfield and has revealed that FIFA will consider a new ‘mercy rule’.
Centre referee during the game which saw Manchester United chase shadows against their rivals Liverpool, Andy Madley added three minutes but Collina believes it should have been more.
Collina questions added time at Anfield
As per a report by Givemesport, the famous Italian felt there should have been more stoppage time at Anfield but the referee used “common sense” to help Manchester United.
“Last weekend, ten matches were played in the Premier League and four matches exceeded 100 minutes,” Collina said per Givemesport via Thetimes.
“Two of them should have been higher than this because they were 7-0 and 4-0 (Brighton vs West Ham United and the referee probably decided not to consider the additional time to be given accurately.”
“Six goals were scored in the second half (at Anfield), I can understand that giving quite a relevant amount of additional time when it is 7-0 is difficult to understand. But if regulations say that the entire goal difference is relevant at the end even one goal scored or not can make the difference.”
FIFA proposes mercy rule
With his stance that Madley should have added more time at Anfield rather than using his discretion because of the scoreline, Collina says FIFA could consider a new rule.
According to the former world's best referee, a new mercy rule could be introduced in future situations as common sense isn't enough.
“Maybe in the future, we may consider saying that additional time has not to be given at the end of the match if there is a difference bigger than X goals between two teams,” he added.
“Now, it is common sense, but common sense is not common if it affects someone (else). In Spain vs Costa Rica at the World Cup, Spain were leading 6-0 and eight minutes additional time were given.”
