The Nigerian midfielder, who started the season brightly, now faces a tough battle to reclaim a regular starting role.

Sarri explains how AFCON and injury disrupted Dele-Bashiru’s momentum

Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri opened up about Dele-Bashiru’s situation ahead of their Serie A clash with Juventus, admitting the midfielder has found it difficult to regain rhythm after a stop-start season.

The 25-year-old suffered an injury in September just as he was building momentum. Although he returned to fitness in November, he failed to start another league match before leaving to join Nigeria for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite helping the Super Eagles secure a bronze medal finish, Dele-Bashiru has struggled to re-establish himself in Lazio’s starting XI since returning to Italy.

Sarri was honest about the situation, saying: “Dele-Bashiru isn't feeling well, but it's clear that between the Africa Cup of Nations and his injury, Basic has advanced.”

The coach’s comments suggest timing has worked against the Nigerian, with squad competition intensifying while he was unavailable.

Limited minutes and transfer links raise questions over future

Dele-Bashiru’s lack of game time is reflected in the numbers. He has played just 314 minutes across 10 Serie A appearances this season, far below what would be expected for a player hoping to cement a first-team place.

Toma Bašić’s rise in the pecking order has made things even tougher, leaving Dele-Bashiru needing strong performances to force his way back into Sarri’s plans.

His situation has already sparked transfer speculation, with reports linking him to a possible January move to Bournemouth.

For now, Dele-Bashiru faces a crucial period, needing both form and fitness to prove he can still become a key figure for Lazio moving forward.
