They also saw Manchester City secure a win over West Ham earlier in the day and moved to the top of the EPL table.

However, they were able to get their spot back with a narrow 1-0 win over the Toffees at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

As it happened

David Moyes made three changes to the side that lost to Chelsea last time out, with Idrissa Gueye and Illiman Ndiaye representing Senegal at Afcon.

Three changes also for Mikel Arteta as Martin Odegaard started ahead of Eberechi Eze, Ricardo Calafiori returned from suspension and Leandro Trossard was chosen over Gabriel Martinelli.

The game started with Arsenal having more of the possession in the early stage, but they were not penetrative enough.

However, they took the lead in the 27th minute from the penalty spot after an Everton defender handled the ball in the box.

Victor Gyokeres stood up to take the penalty and slotted it nicely past Jordan Pickford to get his fourth goal of the EPL season.

In the second half, the Gunners hit the woodwork twice trying to extend their lead and had to hold on to their one-goal advantage.
