Esther Okoronkwo: Super Falcons star crowned Fans Player of the Tournament

Esther Okoronkwo has been voted the Super Falcons’ Fans Player of the Tournament following her outstanding performances at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The 27-year-old forward, who plays for AFC Toronto, stood out as one of the key architects of Nigeria’s impressive run at the tournament, contributing two goals and six assists in six appearances.

Okoronkwo won two Woman of the Match awards, and her influence was important as the Super Falcons clinched their 10th WAFCON title, edging out hosts Morocco 3-2 in a thrilling final.

The announcement was made via the Super Falcons’ official X (formerly Twitter) handle, with the statement, “Presenting your #WAFCON2024 Fans’ Player of the Tournament… Esther Okoronkwo, OON. Clutch. Composed. Crowned by the people.”

Okoronkwo edged out a strong shortlist of teammates, including, team captain, Rasheedat Ajibade who won the player of the tournament, Folashade Ijamilusi, Ashleigh Plumptre, Chiwendu Ihezuo and Jennifer Echegini.

Each of the players made important impacts for the African champions during the competition, but it was Okoronkwo who captured the hearts of fans.

Nigeria’s journey to victory included standout wins and dramatic moments, culminating in a hard-fought win over Morocco in the final.
