Eric Chelle: Ex-AFCON hosts attempt to snatch Super Eagles boss after disappointing outing
Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has emerged as a hot property on the African coaching market following his impressive work with Nigeria.
After leading the Super Eagles to their ninth Bronze medal in Morocco, Angola and Gabon are now pushing strongly to prise him away from the Nigeria Football Federation.
Angola and Gabon circle Chelle after AFCON disappointment
According to reports, Angola and Gabon have identified Chelle as a prime target as they look to rebuild after underwhelming AFCON 2025 campaigns in Morocco. Both nations exited the tournament at the group stage, falling well short of expectations despite their pedigree as former hosts of the competition.
Angola, who hosted AFCON in 2010, and Gabon, hosts in 2012 and 2017, are eager to reset their national teams and believe Chelle’s tactical clarity and man-management could provide a much-needed lift. Sources indicate that both federations are prepared to present attractive financial packages in an attempt to tempt the Franco-Malian coach away from his current role.
Chelle is under contract with the NFF until January 2027, but that has not deterred suitors. Tunisia had previously made an approach for the Super Eagles boss, but Chelle reportedly turned it down, choosing to remain focused on his project with Nigeria at this stage.
NFF talks loom as pressure mounts
With external interest intensifying, Chelle is expected to hold talks with top Nigeria Football Federation officials in the coming days. The meeting is understood to be aimed at reaffirming mutual commitment, outlining long-term objectives, and possibly reviewing aspects of his contract amid growing demand for his services.
Chelle’s stock has risen significantly following Nigeria’s strong performances under his guidance, and the NFF are keen to avoid losing another highly-rated coach at a crucial phase of rebuilding. While there is optimism within Nigerian football circles that he will stay put, the approaches from Angola and Gabon underline the scale of the challenge ahead.
The outcome of the impending talks could be decisive, with Nigeria facing a potential battle to retain their head coach as rival nations look to capitalise on his growing reputation on the continental stage.
