Emiliano Martinez dreams about Champions League football
Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who won the Golden Glove at the Qatar 2022 tournament and has been nominated for the FIFA Best Men's Goalkeeper of the Year for his exploits at the tournament, helping the Albiceleste win, has come out to speak about his ambitions and the future.
'I have the level to play Champions League,' - Martinez
Emiliano is among the top three goalkeepers in the world according to FIFA's The Best awards, and in a recent interview with France Football, the ambitious goalkeeper speaks about a possible move and his Champions League dreams.
Martinez believes a move out of Aston Villa is complicated, as he would like to win a trophy with the club, a feat the 30-year-old admitted was difficult.
However, Martinez believes he is at a level where he should be competing in the Champions League with the intention of winning it, suggesting he would like to make a move to a club with UCL-winning goals.
“New club? I’d like to win a title with Aston Villa, it’s difficult, we will see what happens,” Martinez told France Football, per Fabrizio Romano.
“The feeling that today I have the level to play in the Champions League and try to win it."
Martinez’s rise
Martinez joined Aston Villa from Arsenal in 2020 after impressing as a stand-in for Bernd Leno. The Argentine requested a move as he wanted a more assured number-one spot, which he got at Villa.
His consistent starting position at a top club earned him his Argentina debut, and he has not looked back since, winning the Copa America, Copa Finalissima, and World Cup titles, all of which he was influential in.
According to Transfermarkt, his current market value is €28 million, but it is expected that Villa would request more for the World Cup winner, whose contract is still viable until 2027.
