David Munyua: Millions Kenyan Darts Sensation Will Miss After World Championships Elimination
Kenya’s David Munyua saw his historic run at the World Darts Championship come to an end on Monday and he will miss out on a bumper reward.
Munyua had become a global sensation when he eliminated world No18 Mike De Decker in the first round last week, in what was a historic feat as he is the first Kenyan to feature at the World Darts Championships.
However, his hopes of making it past the second round were dashed as he lost 3-0 to world No.40 Kevin Doets, ending his hopes of going further in the tournament where he was the only player from Africa.
How Much Did Munyua Stand to Win?
Munyua leaves with a tidy sum after his first-round heroics earned him £25,000 (Ksh4.3 million). However, he would have earned an additional £10,000 (Ksh1.7 million) to take his total payout to £35,000 (Ksh6 million) had he beaten Doets and qualified for the third round.
He leaves with his head held high as he was not given any chance of winning a match as he is inexperienced at this level while it was his first trip out of Kenya.
“This is a life-changing moment for myself and for my friends and for darts players across Africa,” Munyua told the Daily Star after his elimination.
Kenyan Urges Africa to Embrace Darts
“As much as I've done it this far, they feel like there's no reason why they cannot do it for themselves. So I think this is the moment where I need to appreciate the fact that Africa needs to embrace darts as a sport, where they need to put their funds into it, support and talent into it.
“And it will be a life-changing moment and I'm happy about it.”
Munyua, who had taken a break from his job as a veterinarian in Kenya to play at Alexandra Palace in north London, booked his spot at the World Championships after winning the African Darts Group Championship qualifier.
