The Blues took control in the 34th minute through teenage sensation Estêvão Willian. After capitalising on a Palace error, the Brazilian embarked on a breathtaking solo run before slotting a left-footed finish past Dean Henderson.

Chelsea’s dominance continued after the break, with João Pedro doubling the lead in the 46th minute. The striker played a sharp give-and-go with Estêvão, skipped past Adam Wharton, and drilled a powerful shot home.

Continuing to provide a threat, Estêvão saw a curling shot parried away by Henderson before the goalkeeper caught a Cucurella effort that had looped up off the floor. He then failed to deal with Reece James’ cross, and Canvot handled Pedro’s shot to concede a penalty, which Fernández confidently converted.

Palace’s situation then got even worse due to Adam Wharton being shown two yellows in five minutes for challenges on Moisés Caicedo.

Sánchez denied a Jefferson Lerma header in the 88th minute, and Chris Richards converted the rebound, to give the home fans something to cheer.
