Community Shield: Ekitike debut goal not enough as Liverpool suffer penalty heartbreak against Palace
Liverpool came into this one as league champions and heavy favourites, especially after their heavy spending this summer, but after a thrilling 2-2 scoreline in regular time, the Reds were overcome by Palace 3-2 in a tense penalty shootout.

Arne Slot's men began with a bang as record signing Florian Wirtz combined with fellow summer arrival Hugo Ekitike, who broke the deadlock with a sweet finish.
Palace responded well to the setback and had a penalty mere moments later as Virgil van Dijk brought down Ismaïla Sarr. Mateta sent Alisson the wrong way from the spot to restore parity in the 17th minute.
Liverpool were soon ahead again as Jeremie Frimpong dinked the ball over Dean Henderson while attempting to cross. The second half saw Palace respond with a flurry of good opportunities before Adam Wharton set up Sarr for a brilliant equaliser.
On to penalties and after Mohamed Salah blazed his spot-kick over, the momentum was with Palace, who converted 3 of their 5 kicks to win their first ever FA Community Shield.
