Track and field power couple Christian Coleman and Sha'Carri Richardson have found themselves in legal trouble again, but this time it's Coleman who could face more severe consequences.

The incident unfolded on January 29, 2026, after Richardson was pulled over for speeding in Florida, leading to a confrontation that resulted in Coleman's arrest.

Richardson was stopped by police for allegedly driving 104 mph in a 65 mph zone, a violation of Florida's new "super speeder" law targeting speeds over 100 mph. Officers reported she was weaving through traffic and tailgating.

According to the police report, Richardson apologized and suggested a low tire and a misplaced phone might have contributed to her excessive speed.

As officers were conducting the traffic stop, Coleman arrived at the scene in a black Jeep. The arrest affidavit states he stopped on the highway without activating his hazard lights and "interjected himself into the traffic stop that he was not involved with."

Why Coleman Faces Harsher Penalty

Christian Coleman and Sha'Carri Richardson were arrested in Florida.

Police say Coleman ignored instructions to return to his vehicle and continued to defend Richardson. After refusing to leave and failing to provide identification, he was arrested and placed in handcuffs.

A subsequent search of Coleman's vehicle uncovered a glass smoking device with what was believed to be cannabis residue. He was also cited for a civil traffic infraction for driving with a registration that had expired for more than six months.

While Richardson faces a single charge for speeding, Coleman is charged with three offenses: resisting an officer without violence, possession of drug paraphernalia, and the expired registration citation. Resisting an officer and possession of paraphernalia are both first-degree misdemeanors in Florida, each carrying a potential penalty of up to one year in jail, 12 months of probation, and a $1,000 fine.

Richardson was released on a $500 bond and is scheduled for a court appearance on February 25, 2026. Coleman was released on a $1,000 bond, with his arraignment set for February 26, 2026.

A History of Public Incidents

Sha'Carri Richardson assaulted boyfriend Christian Coleman at the airport in July 2025.

This is not the first time the high-profile athletes have been involved in a public legal issue. In July 2025, Richardson was arrested at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and charged with fourth-degree domestic violence assault following an argument with Coleman.

Surveillance footage from near a TSA checkpoint showed Richardson shoving Coleman multiple times and pushing him against a wall. Coleman declined to press charges or participate in the investigation, later describing it as "a sucky situation all around" while expressing his support for her.

Following that incident, Richardson issued a public apology on social media. "I apologize to Christian," she wrote. "He came into my life & gave me more than a relationship but a greater understanding of unconditional love... Due to my past trauma & pain, I was blind & blocked off to not only receive it but give it."

Now, with both athletes once again in the spotlight for the wrong reasons, the focus shifts to their upcoming court dates, where Coleman appears to be in a more precarious legal position.
