Enzo Maresca has faced criticism from fans, who branded him a "chequebook manager" after he called for a new centre-back following Levi Colwill’s long-term injury.

The sentiment comes from a belief that Maresca is never satisfied with his squad and prefers splashing cash rather than utilizing existing talent.

When asked about the possibility of replacing the injured Colwill, Maresca said via Fabrizio Romano, “It’s a priority for me to get a new centre back. We will see if we go for it.”

The disgruntled fan on X, suggested the Chelsea boss must use one of the nine available defenders instead of looking for a new signing.

Maresca has spent heavily on players since leaving Leicester City to become Chelsea manager last summer.

This summer alone, the Blues have splashed £190 million on new signings, including Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens, and Jorrel Hato, with Alejandro Garnacho expected to join from Manchester United.

This follows last year’s £325 million spree, raising questions about financial sustainability, especially at a time when clubs like Aston Villa, Newcastle, and even Crystal Palace have struggled to sign players.
