CAF’s decision is noted - Super Falcons star breaks silence after omission from CAF Awards final 3
Nigerian forward Esther Okoronkwo has publicly expressed her frustration after being omitted from the final three-player shortlist for the 2025 CAF Women's Player of the Year award.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) had initially included Okoronkwo in a 10-player preliminary list, but she did not advance to the final round.
The final nominees are fellow Nigerian Rasheedat Ajibade and Moroccan duo Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaa Mssoudy.
The decision came as a surprise to many, considering Okoronkwo's stellar performances for both her country and club.
The 28-year-old was a key player for Nigeria at the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, where she scored one goal and provided six assists.
At the club level, Okoronkwo enjoyed a remarkable season with AFC Toronto, playing a pivotal role in their victory as they secured the inaugural NSL Shield in September.
What Okoronkwo said
Taking to social media to voice her disappointment, the forward made it clear she felt her on-field contributions were overlooked.
"I remain grateful for the support across Africa. CAF’s decision is noted, but my focus stays on the pitch where recognition is earned, not awarded," Okoronkwo stated on her Instagram page.
"Awards don’t always reflect reality, but the pitch never lies."
