CAF World Cup Playoffs: Super Eagles urged to watch out for Gabon star who ran Messi close
The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been warned to be wary of Gabon’s in-form forward, Denis Bouanga, ahead of their important CAF World Cup qualification playoff clash on Thursday, November 13, at the Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium, Rabat.
Bouanga, who has been in sensational form for Los Angeles FC (LAFC) in the Major League Soccer (MLS), is expected to pose a major threat to Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles as Nigeria looks to secure a ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Bouanga: The Red-Hot Threat
The 29-year-old forward has been on a tear in front of the goal, scoring 26 goals and providing 8 assists in 33 MLS appearances this season.
He recently hit a milestone, 100 goals for LAFC across all competitions, during a commanding 4–1 victory over Austin FC that sent his club to the MLS Western Conference semifinals.
Bouanga's consistent performance challenged Lionel Messi for the 2025 MLS Golden Boot, which Messi ultimately led with 29 goals in 28 games for Inter Miami CF.

Bouanga (LAFC) and Sam Surridge (Nashville SC) tied for second with 24 goals each.
In addition to his club heroics, Bouanga has been a revelation for the Gabon national team (The Panthers), finishing as the third-highest scorer in the African World Cup qualifiers with 8 goals and 2 assists.
His ability to replicate his club form on the international stage makes him a serious concern for Nigeria’s defence.
Aubameyang–Bouanga partnership is a double headache for Super Eagles
The Super Eagles’ defence will not only have to deal with Bouanga’s pace and precision but also contend with his deadly partnership with veteran striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The duo has been pivotal for Gabon, most notably in the 4–3 win over Gambia, where Bouanga assisted Aubameyang for the opening goal.
Their chemistry up front has given Gabon a new attacking identity that has seen them climb steadily in the qualification race.
Chelle’s Tactical Dilemma
Nigeria’s coach, Eric Chelle, faces a tough tactical challenge in finding the right balance between attack and defence. The Super Eagles, who boast attacking stars like Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Samuel Chukwueze, will need to ensure their defensive shape remains solid against Gabon’s dangerous front two.
Chelle might deploy a more compact backline, possibly featuring Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi, and Benjamin Fredrick, to contain Bouanga’s runs and limit space behind the defence.
The playoff clash in Rabat could prove decisive in determining who advances to the next phase of the qualifiers.
For Nigeria, anything short of victory could put their World Cup hopes in jeopardy, while Gabon will look to capitalise on their attacking form to cause an upset.
