Businessman club owner explains how Galatasaray can afford Victor Osimhen money
Isitan Gun, the co-owner of Dutch club Fortuna Sittard, recently discussed Victor Osimhen's transfer to Galatasaray, in which he explained how Cim-Bom hope to recoup their investment from the transfer.
The Super Lig champions obliterated their previous transfer record by more than €50 million to sign Victor Osimhen from Napoli, and he became not only their record top scorer but the league's as well.
What Isitan said
However, Gun, a Turkish businessman who owns 20% of Fortuna, does not believe this is the start of a trend. He argued that the Osimhen transfer is a unique incident and that fans should not expect their clubs to start spending as much.
"It's not the new norm, and Turkey isn't becoming the new Saudi Arabia." Isitan said, per Voetbal Central. "I never see a transfer like this happening again in the Turkish league. 75 million is insane. It's a one-off, I think."
Gun was previously a board member at Galatasaray, and he provided some insights into the club's thought process. He said Osimhen's signing is an investment on the club's part and that they expect to make their money from sponsorship deals.
"This transfer is also an investment. They assume his resale value will increase if he has another good season," he continued. "You could call it reckless, but the club is generating a significant profit worldwide from enormous shirt sales and the sporting momentum they currently have.
"Even if they don't make it far in the Champions League this year, they can still absorb this transfer financially. The club doesn't spend money it doesn't have."
