Benfica consider Ruben Amorim as Jose Mourinho exit rumours grow
Portuguese giants Benfica are reportedly drawing up contingency plans that could see former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim return to the dugout if current boss Jose Mourinho departs at the end of the season.
Although Benfica’s hierarchy is understood to be satisfied with Mourinho’s overall performance, discussions have allegedly begun behind the scenes regarding potential successors.
The experienced tactician has recently been linked with a sensational return to Real Madrid. At the same time, he is also viewed as a strong candidate for the Portugal national team role following this year’s World Cup.
With uncertainty surrounding Mourinho’s future, Amorim has emerged as a leading option. The highly rated Portuguese coach became available in January after parting ways with Manchester United, reportedly receiving a settlement package exceeding £10 million.
Despite being out of work, Amorim is not believed to be rushing back into management. Reports suggest he plans to take time off and only consider new opportunities in the summer, allowing him to carefully assess the right project.
For now, Mourinho remains in charge, and Benfica’s board continues to back him publicly. However, with interest building from Europe’s elite and the international stage, the Portuguese side appears determined to stay prepared for any eventuality as the season approaches its conclusion.
