Bayer Leverkusen bolster attack with more Nigerian flavour as Saint Tella signs
Real Madrid legend Xabi Alonso has strengthened his attack at Bayer Leverkusen following the addition of Nathan Tella.
Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed the arrival of Tella, who has swapped the English Championship for the German Bundesliga after he joined from Southampton.
Leverkusen confirmed Tella’s arrival through a short statement on their official X.com account on Sunday morning.
“We are delighted to announce the signing of the 24-year-old Englishman,” the club posted on their X account.
Tella to Bayer Leverkusen
Tella, who was born in England but is still eligible for the Nigeria Super Eagles, has already put pen to paper on a five-year contract.
He will join the Werkself until the summer of 2028 in a deal that has cost the Bundesliga club around 20 million pounds.
You will recall that Pulse Sports reported that Leverkusen and Southampton had reached an agreement that will see the versatile forward become the latest Nigerian at the BayArena.
Personal terms were never a problem between both parties as Leverkusen beat off competition from two Premier League sides, West Ham United and Burnley, to land their man.
Tella proved pivotal last season while on loan from Southampton to Burnley as the Clarets sealed a return to the Premier League.
Vincent Kompany hoped to make the transfer permanent but the Clarets came short of Southampton’s valuation, with Leverkusen sealing the deal.
Tella’s move sees Leverkusen add to their attack which already has the sensational Victor Boniface, also a Nigerian who joined the club this summer.
Boniface impressive start
22-year-old striker Boniface has already paved the way for Tella at Bayer with his excellent start to life.
The former Union Saint-Giloise man has proved to be an astute signing so far for the Werkself following his blistering start to life.
Boniface has been heavily involved as Leverkusen kicked off the new campaign with two consecutive wins.
He has contributed three goals, two goals which came in the last game against Borussia Monchengladbach, and an assist in the season’s opener, in his first two matches for the club in the Bundesliga.
Boniface also netted in a comprehensive cup win for Alonso’s side and the club will be hoping that the additional of Tella will see the two Nigerians form a solid partnership that will take Werkself up a notch.
Boniface and Tella combined for over 40 goals last season for Union Saint-Gilloise and Burnley respectively in all competitions.
