Ballon d’Or winner goes on strike after club offered him “insulting” offer during contract renewal negotiation
The former Real Madrid star joined Al-Ittihad in 2023 on a lucrative contract that reportedly pays him £1.61 million per week.
With his current agreement set to expire at the end of the 2025-26 season, discussions over his future have seemingly hit a major roadblock.
Benzema's £85 million annual salary makes him one of the highest-paid footballers globally, surpassed only by Lionel Messi's £96.9 million at Inter Miami and Cristiano Ronaldo's colossal £194 million-a-year deal at Al-Nassr.
Benzema’s contract renewal issue
According to reports from France, both the club and the player were initially keen to extend their partnership.
However, after Al-Ittihad presented their first offer on Thursday, Benzema was reportedly so offended by the terms that he removed himself from the team's upcoming match.
As a result, head coach Sergio Conceicao had to leave the French striker out of the squad for the 2-2 draw against Al Fateh.
Conceicao deflected questions regarding the high-profile absence, directing inquiries to the club's management.
Sources suggest Benzema has begun training separately from the first team, feeling the extension offer was disrespectful.
The 2022 Ballon d'Or winner is said to have accused the club of expecting him to "play for free" initially, with compensation tied only to his image rights.
While Benzema has had a productive individual season with eight goals in 14 league appearances, Al-Ittihad has struggled, currently sitting sixth in the Saudi Pro League standings.
Amid the contract dispute, speculation is growing that the 38-year-old may consider a move away from the club as the European transfer window nears its conclusion.
