Dembélé scored 35 goals and provided 16 assists in 53 games en route to winning the French Ligue 1, the French League Cups and PSG’s first-ever UEFA Champions League title.
Meanwhile, Mo Salah and his Liverpool side were defeated via penalties in the second round of the 24/25 UEFA Champions League but the Egyptian still managed an incredible 34 goals and 23 assists in 52 games, leading the Anfield side to another Premier League crown.
Liverpool FC reacts to Mo Salah’s Ballon d’Or finish
In a post on Instagram, Liverpool FC shared photos of their talisman waving to fans at Anfield, and numerous other photos including his PFA awards, and his EPL golden boot award.
“A season to savour from Salah,” with a love emoji was the caption on the post that had the Premier League official account tagged.
It is difficult to say whether Liverpool feel Salah deserves a shot at the award, considering the incredible season Dembélé had but then a fourth place finish behind Yamal, Vitinha might raise eyebrows.
Salah deserves better - Liverpool fans react
Many Liverpool fans quickly flooded the comments section of the post, airing their views on what some of them perceive to be unfair not to crown Mo Salah. Here are some of the comments:
One @thatliverpoolguy said ‘Best Player in the World 👑Idk what popularity award tells while another fan @ahmedhazemhafez stated ‘For us you’re number 1 king👑.’
36340_modane believes that ‘If the Ballon d'Or was awarded to the best player in the world, rather than the best player from the best team, Salah would've won,’ @yxsxf.07 said ‘Done it in hardest league in the world deserves it more than anyone.’
On his part, @Asep_hdi.real said: ‘It's not fair that the balloon was given to Mo Salah. Is the balloon only given to UCL champions? And did Liverpool win the UCL in 2019 and Mo Salah didn't get the balloon either? That's very strange.’
Other Liverpool stars that were honoured during the Ballon d'Or ceremony include:
Alisson Becker - Yashin Trophy (2nd)
Alexis Mac Allister - Ballon d’Or (22nd)
Virgil Van Dijk - Ballon d’Or (28th)
Liverpool will be in action later today in the Carabao Cup when Arne Slot’s team take on Southampton. Kick off is 8PM Nigerian time.
