Wayne Rooney has suggested that Arsenal may fall short in the Premier League title race due to the absence of a true “superstar” in their squad.

With 12 matches remaining in the season, Arsenal sit four points clear of defending champions Manchester City, with a pivotal clash against Pep Guardiola’s side looming in April.

What Rooney said

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Rooney questioned whether the Gunners possess the individual brilliance often required to clinch a title.

“I agree with the fact that Arsenal don’t have an out-and-out superstar, a world-class player that you can pin everything on,” Rooney said.

Despite his reservations, Rooney acknowledged Arsenal’s consistency in recent seasons.

“What we’ve seen over the last few years is that they know how to win games. They’ve shown you don’t need that superstar player,” he admitted.

However, he compared Arsenal’s squad to past title-winning sides that relied on decisive individuals such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Didier Drogba, and Sergio Aguero.

“Have they got that Ronaldo, Didier Drogba, Sergio Aguero type player that’s going to make a difference? I don’t think they have,” he added.

Rooney’s strongest criticism was directed not at the squad, but at the atmosphere surrounding the club. He suggested that anxious commentary from supporters and former players could negatively impact the team’s mentality.

He referenced comments made by former Arsenal defender Martin Keown, questioning the logic behind suggesting that a smaller points lead might ease pressure.

“That’s an experienced player getting nervous. The Arsenal fans, along with ex-players coming out, are killing them. They should stay silent and let everyone else talk,” Rooney remarked.

In contrast, Rooney praised Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta for maintaining composure amid mounting pressure.

“Mikel Arteta is handling it brilliantly, the way he’s speaking, how he’s coming out in the media, how he’s trying to calm the players down. It’s other people who are connected to the club who are having more of an effect,” Rooney noted.
