Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka echoed the sentiments of many of their fans, who believe that they repeatedly get the short end of the stick regarding refereeing in the Premier League.

Arsenal scrape past Magpies

The Gunners were 2-1 victors over Newcastle earlier today, thanks to a towering header by Gabriel Maghalaes. Arsenal came close to losing the tie, however, as they were 1-0 down until the 83rd minute of the game before a comeback was inspired by Mikel Merino’s equaliser.

However, they could have scored much earlier after referee Jarred Gillet awarded a penalty to Arsenal, following what looked like a foul on Viktor Gyokeres.

However, upon VAR review, the decision was overturned, a ruling which sparked discontent from the Gunners’ faithful. While they eventually won the game, Saka made sure to point out the perceived injustice.

What Saka said

Saka argued that the length it required to check the incident meant that it was not clear and obvious; hence, the on-field decision should never have been overturned.

“I’m speechless… For me, if we have VAR, it's for clear and obvious error," he said, per Fabrizio. “The fact it took ref that long to decide it shows it's not clear error. These little things always go against us, but today we got what we deserved.”
