Alpha Onyango’s Stunning Strike Ends Gor Mahia’s Mini-Crisis as K’Ogalo Regain Top Spot
Gor Mahia ended their run of three games without a win when they bounced back with a 1-0 victory over Kakamega Homeboyz thanks to Alpha Onyango’s stunning strike.
K’Ogalo headed into the contest at Kasarani Stadium on Wednesday afternoon under pressure to return to winning ways, having lost two and drawn one of their previous three games.
However, they nearly went behind as soon as the game started when Kevin Amwayi struck the upright from a well-taken volley in the first minute of the game.
Two minutes later, Gor Mahia should have broken the deadlock when Shariff Musa made a good run on the right side before crossing the ball to Felix Oluoch but Homeboyz goalkeeper Simon Masaka got the ball before he could strike.
Alpha Onyango Delivers For Gor Mahia
The breakthrough would arrive in the 18th minute and in some style. From a set-piece, the ball was headed from the Homeboyz box but it fell to Onyango, who was stationed outside the box.
The midfielder hammered home from a low shot as the ball went past a forest of legs as well as Masaka into the Homeboyz goal for his first of the season.
Gor Mahia should have made it 2-0 in the 27th minute when Masaka denied Ebenezer Adu-Kwaw from close range as K’Ogalo went to the break leading 1-0.
In the second half, Musa and Oluoch should have had great chances but missed their opportunities. The first came in the 61st minute when Oluoch played in Musa but with the keeper to beat, the former Bidco United winger saw Masaka react quickly to deny him.
K’Ogalo Back to the Top of the Table
Oluoch then got his chance in the 66th minute when he headed just over the bar a great cross from Paul Ochuoga when he was free at the back post
Homeboyz’ best chance of the second half fell to Hillary Otieno in the 69th minute when he attempted from distance but Gor Mahia goalkeeper Byrne Omondi easily gathered.
Victory sees Gor Mahia move top of the table with 23 points, two ahead of second-placed KCB from 12 games, having played one match less than the bankers.
It eases pressure on their Ghanaian coach Charles Akonnor who was staring at a revolt from fans had his team gone four games without a win.
