Speaking during a pre-match press conference, the former Manchester City winger was asked about facing Nigeria’s free-scoring frontline led by Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams.

Mahrez initially responded with humour before offering a measured assessment.

“I am afraid,” Mahrez joked, before adding, “Of course, they scored a lot of goals at this competition. They have a very good attack, I can’t deny it. But tomorrow will be tomorrow. I am not scared at all; it’s a football game. We have our own quality, we have our strengths, and I think it will be a good game.”

Nigeria head into the quarter-final as the tournament’s most prolific side, having scored 12 goals in four matches. Osimhen, Lookman and Adams have been central to that run, with the Super Eagles overwhelming opponents with pace and finishing quality.

Algeria, however, have relied on defensive solidity, conceding just one goal throughout the competition.

Mahrez also revealed that the ongoing tournament is likely to be his final appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations, adding emotional weight to Algeria’s campaign.

“I want to do well. I think it will be my last Africa Cup of Nations,” the 34-year-old said. “I don’t want to look too far ahead. Right now, I just want to focus on the next game and give everything, because it is very important for our country, our supporters and our families.”

The Algerian captain is no stranger to decisive moments against Nigeria. He famously scored a dramatic last-minute free-kick against the Super Eagles in the 2019 AFCON semi-final, a goal that sent Algeria to the final and ultimately paved the way for their continental triumph in Egypt.
