Ajax plan for Akpom sale with ex-Manchester United striker linked as replacement
Ajax are planning for life without super sub Chuba Akpom as a key part of their strategy to generate funds for new signings.
The club’s new management has compiled a list of potential reinforcements, and Akpom's sale is seen as a necessary step to free up the budget needed for these acquisitions.
Ajax plan for Weghorst with Akpom funds
Among the potential new signings, former Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst is seriously being considered by Ajax. Currently fixed at Burnley until mid-2025, Weghorst would need several hurdles cleared for a switch to Amsterdam, but remains a prime target.
While not a typical Ajax striker, he is still considered an interesting option by the club management for various reasons. Notably, Ajax aims to increase the number of Dutch players in their squad under the guidance of technical director Alex Kroes, following a season where they recruited twelve foreigners.
Despite Ajax’s interest in Weghorst, the Dutch striker appears ot heva his heart set on a move to FC Twente, although nothing concrete has been decided yet.
Akpom’s short spell with Ajax
Super Eagles star Akpom’s with the former Dutch champions has been a mixed bag with highs and lows punctuating his first 12 months in the Netherlands.
After initially failing to break into the Ajax team following his €12.3m move from Middlesbrough, Akpom produced some impressive performances with the time he was allowed, earning him the “Super sub” moniker.
The Nigeria-eligible forward scored 15 goals and provided three assists in 25 appearances in all competitions for Ajax, despite starting only 11 games all season in his debut campaign for the club.
