Africa Club Hockey Championships: Nigeria's Delta Queens suffer defeat
Ghana defeated Nigeria's Delta Queens at the 2023 African Club Hockey Championships.
Delta Queens humiliated Malawi's Capital Braves in the first match 17-0 before losing to their West African rivals, Ghana.
The championship began on a high note on Saturday with the Asaba-based team teaching the host country a lesson in hockey, winning 9-0 in the first half and adding another 8-0 victory in the second.
Due to the failure of Kaduna State's male and female teams to make it to Blantyre, Malawi, the organizers were forced to reschedule the fixtures.
Nigeria 3-4 Ghana
The game between Nigeria and Ghana gave the fans the excitement of hockey, with Delta Queens trailing 1-2 at halftime. Faith Obukowho scored for the Delta Queens.
But the coach-led Delta Queens Hockey team found their stride in the second half, with Obuko scoring to level the game at 2-2 with 15 minutes to play.
The Ghanaians took back the lead 3-2, but Delta Queens' Benedicta Johnson equalized at 3-3. When the fans thought the game would end in a draw, the Ghanaians were awarded a controversial penalty in the last minute, which they converted to win the game 4-3.
Despite the loss, Delta Queens is still aiming for a podium finish in the championship, which ends on November 26. Today is a rest day for the Asaba-based side.
Other results
In the other women's game on Saturday, Kenya's Lakers defeated Malawi's Scorpions 12-0, while the Blazers, also of Kenya, defeated Generic of Malawi 13-1.
