Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane has revealed that his late grandfather played a pivotal role in his decision to represent the North African nation instead of France on the international stage.
The 26-year-old shot-stopper, son of former France and Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane, made his senior debut for Algeria against Sudan at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
What Luca Zidane said
Despite being eligible to play for France, Luca opted to honour his family roots by pledging his international future to Algeria.
“My grandfather encouraged me to play for Algeria. He wanted me to be proud of my origins, and I wanted to honour him,” Zidane told CAFOnline.
Zidane revealed that his famous father fully respected and supported his decision, emphasising the importance of making a personal and meaningful choice.
“My father told me to make my choice and to do it with conviction. It’s really nice that he came with my brother. I’ve always had my family’s support, and seeing them here at AFCON gives me even more strength to defend Algeria’s colours,” he said.
