Former Nigerian international Kenneth Omeruo has cautioned the Super Eagles to approach their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) group-stage encounter against Tunisia with tactical awareness and full concentration.
Nigeria and Tunisia will square off on Saturday at the 40,000-capacity Fez Stadium in Morocco in what is shaping up to be a decisive Group C showdown.
Both sides go into the fixture on the back of impressive opening victories, with Nigeria edging Tanzania 2-1 and Tunisia recording a commanding 3-1 win over Uganda.
With qualification for the round of 16 potentially on the line, Omeruo believes the Super Eagles must guard against complacency, warning that the North Africans pose a different kind of threat.
What Omeruo said
Speaking to PUNCH Sports Extra, the 31-year-old defender, who was part of Nigeria’s title-winning squad at AFCON 2013, highlighted Tunisia’s tactical discipline and technical quality.
“It’s an important game. If we win, we go into the next round, but we have to be careful because Tunisia are more technical than our last opponents,” Omeruo said.
He added that while Nigeria’s mindset should always be to push for victory, the team must also be prepared for a more structured and intelligent opponent.
“We will always play to win, but I don’t expect anything short of good football as well,” he stated.
Omeruo’s warning carries weight, given his pedigree at the continental level. He was a key figure in the late Stephen Keshi’s legendary Super Eagles side that lifted the AFCON trophy in South Africa in 2013.
During that historic run, Omeruo formed a formidable defensive partnership with Joseph Yobo, Elderson Echiéjilé, and Godfrey Oboabona.
Drawing from that experience, the former Chelsea defender emphasised the importance of preparation, teamwork, and tactical discipline when facing technically astute sides like Tunisia.
