AFCON 2025: Super Eagles players promised G-Wagon valued at over $130k each for beating Algeria
While the Super Eagles were busy slaying the Desert Foxes on the pitch, injured striker Victor Boniface was busy setting Nigerian social media on fire with a victory promise that has left fans and perhaps his accountant in a state of shock.
In the wake of Nigeria’s one-sided 2–0 quarter-final win over Algeria at AFCON 2025, Boniface took to his official X (formerly Twitter) account to announce a reward that makes standard match bonuses look like spare change.
“For the good game today. I promise all the players 1 G wagon each,” Boniface posted, sending his 28-man squad of teammates into a frenzy of digital celebrations.
The Math behind the madness
The audacious nature of the promise becomes clear when you look at the numbers.
A 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon (G-Class) is currently valued at a starting price of roughly $130,000 to $150,000.
With 28 players in the final AFCON squad, if Boniface fulfills the promise for the entire squad, he is looking at a total expenditure exceeding $3.6 million (roughly ₦5.5 billion).
While Boniface is one of Nigeria’s highest-earning exports, currently on loan at Werder Bremen from Bayer Leverkusen, fans have been quick to point out that even for a Bundesliga star, buying 28 luxury SUVs is a monumental flex.
A troll or a true reward?
Known as the "King of Vibe" in the Super Eagles camp, Boniface’s sense of humour is legendary.
Many believe the post is a classic example of his troll personality, intended to boost team morale while he watches from the sidelines in Germany recovering from recent surgery.
However, the promise comes during a week of massive financial incentives for the team.
Earlier on Saturday, Nigerian billionaire and BUA Chairman Abdul Samad Rabiu pledged $500,000 for a semi-final win and $1 million for the trophy.
Social Media Reaction
The Nigerian "X-sphere" has been divided between awe and hilarity:
"For that Air osimhen goal , I promise dem 1 Airplane each" Super Falcons star Asisat Oshoala replied.
"This is the kind of motivation we need. If they see the G-Wagon at the airport, they will win the final 5–0," another added.
Boniface’s generosity or high-level banter follows a difficult week for the striker, who recently revealed he has been "putting on a fake smile" for a year due to persistent knee injuries.
Despite his personal setbacks, he has been the team's loudest cheerleader on social media, also taking time today to hail Bright Osayi-Samuel as the best right-back in Africa.
