AFCON 2025: Nigeria Settles In Early as Group Stage Drama Continues

There’s a point in every big gathering when you stop asking who’s coming and start checking who’s already comfortable.

Seats are taken. Food is circulating. Conversations are flowing. That’s exactly where AFCON 2025 is right now, and Nigeria is already settled.

After two rounds in Morocco, the Super Eagles have done enough to book a place in the Round of 16, easing some early nerves and shifting the mood from survival to ambition. The opening days delivered everything African football promises, including late goals, sudden tension, unexpected heroes and moments that yielded memes. Now, as the group stage edges toward its final act, the tournament has found its rhythm, and the real business is about to begin.

That Tunisia Game Increased our BP

Every family meeting also has that one moment that almost ruins everyone’s appetite.

Nigeria’s 3–2 win over Tunisia was exactly that. At 3–0 up, the mood was relaxed. People were already joking, planning and arguing about who should start the next match against Uganda. Then Tunisia reminded us why football never allows comfort. Two late goals, raised voices, and suddenly everyone was standing up again instead of sitting down.

Still, the job was done. Victor Osimhen set the tone, Wilfred Ndidi anchored the midfield like a proper senior man, and Ademola Lookman once again showed why he’s becoming Nigeria’s most reliable problem-solver. Under Eric Chelle, Nigeria handled the pressure, closed the door, and booked qualification with a game to spare. No matter how dramatic it got, the result stands.

The Village Square Is Busy

Away from Nigeria’s table, Round Two produced its own talking points. Benin finally got their moment, claiming their first-ever AFCON win and announcing themselves properly at the meeting. Ivory Coast and Cameroon, two of the loudest voices in African football, couldn’t separate themselves and now head into the final round knowing there’s still work to do.

Mozambique also reminded everyone that history doesn’t matter once the whistle blows, ending a 39-year wait for an AFCON win with a wild comeback against Gabon. At this stage, nobody is small anymore. Everyone is alert. Nobody is smiling too much.

Round Three: The Final Sorting

Now comes the final sieve. The round where politeness fully disappears.

Nigeria return to action on Tuesday, December 30 at 5:00 pm against Uganda. With qualification already secured, the conversation has shifted. Should the coach rotate? Give the younger players a chance to speak? Or keep the engine running and finish strong? Either way, momentum matters, and no one wants to limp into the knockout rounds.

Wednesday, December 31 brings serious New Year’s Eve drama. Ivory Coast face Gabon at 8:00 pm, while Cameroon take on Mozambique at the same time. While some people will be preparing crossover services and fireworks, the real tension will be unfolding on the pitch, as teams fight for survival before the calendar flips.
