Mikel Obi has suggested that Nigeria's boss, Eric Chelle, may not have had full control over the selection process, casting doubts over the nation's chances at AFCON 2025.
The former Chelsea midfielder voiced his belief that external influences likely played a role in determining the final 28-man roster recently announced by Chelle.
The squad notably excluded several prominent players, including Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, Wolves striker Tolu Arokodare, Crystal Palace's Christantus Uche, and a few other surprise omissions.
Francis Uzoho's recall over Okoye and the inclusion of five debutants, Ryan Alebiosu, Usman Muhammed, Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, Tochukwu Nnadi, and Salim Fago Lawal, have raised eyebrows.
Mikel Obi claims Nigeria's best players not picked for AFCON
Speaking on his "Obi One Podcast," the retired international claimed the selection was not based purely on performance.
"I don't think the right players are being selected from what I hear," Mikel stated. "I think the manager doesn't have the full authority to select who he wants. I think there's a lot of influence on his selection."
Nigeria will play a friendly match against Egypt before commencing their Group C campaign against Tanzania. The Super Eagles will also face Uganda and Tunisia in the group stage.
Fans of the Super Eagles will remain optimistic that a squad with the likes of Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi and more, will finally deliver the country's first AFCON trophy since 2013.
