The 2013 AFCON winner spoke ahead of Friday’s high-stakes clash, which is expected to determine the group winner after both Nigeria and Tunisia opened their campaigns with victories.

What Obaobona said

Nigeria began their AFCON 2025 journey with a 2-1 win over Tanzania, a match that also marked the competitive debut of head coach Eric Chelle.

While the result was encouraging, Obaobona believes the Super Eagles must raise their overall performance level against a disciplined Tunisian side.

“Football today is no longer about individual stars,” Obaobona told Footy Africa.

He added, “The Super Eagles have stars; in fact, they have quality in all departments, but modern football is about collective play, teamwork, and commitment on the pitch.”

The former defender warned that relying solely on big names could prove costly in African football, where physicality and organization often trump individual talent.

“If you believe you are Messi and you are not putting in the work, someone else will take the ball from you and hurt your team. If they play as a team, they will definitely go far in the competition,” he added.

Nigeria will face Tunisia on December 27, with top spot in Group C at stake. The Carthage Eagles currently sit above the Super Eagles on goal difference after their 3-1 victory over Uganda.
