Regragui confirms Hakimi fitness boost for Morocco

Morocco head coach Walid Regragui confirmed on Sunday that captain Achraf Hakimi is fully fit and available for selection following weeks of uncertainty over his condition.

Hakimi had been a major doubt heading into the tournament after appearing on crutches at the CAF Awards ceremony in Rabat last month, despite being crowned Africa’s best player.

Although the Paris Saint-Germain right-back declared himself ready on the eve of the competition, he was not used in Morocco’s opening two Group A matches. His absence raised concerns among fans, given his importance both as captain and as a driving force on the right flank.

Regragui revealed that Hakimi’s recovery was carefully managed, crediting PSG for their cooperation in allowing the defender to return early and work closely with the national team’s medical staff.

“I want to thank Paris Saint-Germain. If Hakimi is back with us today, it's thanks to them,” the Morocco boss said, highlighting the unusual nature of a club releasing a key player well ahead of the tournament.

Zambia clash offers Hakimi first AFCON 2025 minutes

Hakimi’s expected return comes at a crucial moment for the Atlas Lions, who need victory over Zambia to secure top spot in their group.

Morocco have not lifted the Africa Cup of Nations since 1976, and expectations are high for the hosts to mount a serious title challenge on home soil.

The 25-year-old’s inclusion is expected to add pace, leadership and attacking thrust to Morocco’s setup, especially after two solid but unspectacular performances without him.

His experience at the highest level with PSG and on the international stage is seen as vital as the tournament edges toward the knockout rounds.

With Hakimi now fit and ready, Morocco will be confident of asserting control against Zambia and sending a clear statement to the rest of the competition as they chase long-awaited continental glory.
