AFCON 2023: CAF unveils lucrative tournament prize money

As the tournament heats into the quarterfinals, the stakes have never been higher with millions of dollars on the line for the participating nations.

The ultimate champion of AFCON 2023 will walk away with a whopping $7 million, a significant incentive for the competing teams. The runner-up is not left far behind, with a generous $4 million prize as reported by Africa Facts Zone on X.

Meanwhile, the semi-finalists are guaranteed $2.5 million each, ensuring that the top four teams are handsomely rewarded for their efforts.

The financial rewards extend beyond the top four, with the quarter-finalists each receiving $1.3 million. The eight teams that exit in the round of 16 are set to earn $800,000 each, making every match crucial. 

Additionally, two teams that finish third in their groups but do not advance will each receive $700,000. The teams that find themselves at the bottom of their groups are still rewarded, with $500,000 each, highlighting CAF's commitment to supporting football development across all participating nations.

As the quarterfinal stage kicks off, eight teams vie for glory and the chance to etch their names in the annals of African football history. 

The spotlight is on the Felix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, where Nigeria will face Angola in a highly anticipated match today. 

Nigeria, in pursuit of their fourth Africa Cup of Nations title, which they last won in 2013, looks to overcome their old foes and move one step closer to lifting the trophy once again.
