AFCON 2023: CAF reveals Nigeria's Pot ahead of October draws

The road to Cote d’Ivoire 2023 for Nigeria looks clearer than ever after the Confederation of African Football, CAF, revealed the pots for the AFCON 2023 ahead of the draws scheduled for October.

This revelation has heightened the anticipation for CAF’s biggest competition, the AFCON, slated for the Ivory Coast early next year. 

CAF’s announcement, made via its social media accounts, has already sparked discussions among fans as they analyse potential paths to glory for countries in the coveted tournament.

Nigeria’s path in AFCON

CAF disclosed the pot placement of the teams in readiness for the draw, with Nigeria as one of the favourites for the title.

Nigeria and the Super Eagles find themselves in Pot 2 for the draw and could be drawn with one of the biggest nations in the continent. 

The allocation which is a result of FIFA rankings and the performance of the participating teams means Nigeria is not one of the seeded teams.

Nigeria finished as top scorers of the AFCONQ2023, with the Super Eagles scoring 22 goals in six matches.

Joining Nigeria in Pot 2 are Cameroon, Mali, DR Congo, Burkina Faso and Ghana. 

Meanwhile, the seeded teams in Pot 1 are led by defending champions Senegal, host nation, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria.

With the pots now revealed, followers of Nigeria Super Eagles will closely follow events leading up to the main draw slated for next month in anticipation of the unveiling of Nigeria’s group and opponents.

The outcome of the draw could determine the challenges Jose Peseiro and his Eagles will face in Ivory Coast on their quest to win a fourth title for the country.

As the countdown for the ceremony begins, the excitement and speculation surrounding Nigeria’s potential opponents will surely grow. 

Peseiro and his team have been given the mandate by the NFF to win the AFCON next year in Ivory Coast.
