Roy Keane has poured cold water on growing calls for Michael Carrick to be considered for the Manchester United job on a permanent basis, despite the Red Devils’ dramatic 3-2 victory over Arsenal.

The former United captain insisted that two wins are not enough to convince him that Carrick is the right man to lead the club long term.

Keane dismisses Carrick as long-term solution

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Keane was blunt in his assessment of Carrick’s credentials. “You're being silly now. Two great performances, but anyone can win two games,” he said.

Keane went even further, adding: “Even if they do get into fourth, I still wouldn't be convinced he's the man for the job. Absolutely not.

“They need a bigger and better manager. But he has got the opportunity and what a chance for him, and you know what, he's taking it.”

While acknowledging that Carrick has made a positive start, Keane made it clear he believes United should be aiming higher when it comes to appointing a permanent head coach.

Man United comeback boosts top-four hopes

Manchester United’s comeback at the Emirates was sparked by goals from Bryan Mbeumo, Patrick Dorgu and a sensational late winner from Matheus Cunha.

After Lisandro Martinez’s own goal handed Arsenal the lead, Mbeumo capitalised on a costly error to level before the break, before Dorgu’s thunderous volley put United ahead early in the second half.

Although Mikel Merino briefly restored parity in the 84th minute, Cunha’s stunning 25-yard strike just three minutes later sealed a breathless victory.

The result lifts United into fourth place, leapfrogging Chelsea on goal difference, and keeps them firmly in the hunt for Champions League qualification.
